Privacy Policy

Who we are

The Forgotten Front (theforgottenfront.org) is an independent military history archive. We publish researched stories and films about the people of past wars. In this policy, “we” and “us” mean The Forgotten Front. If you have any question about your information, write to us at contact@theforgottenfront.org.

We collect as little as we can, we never sell it, and we use it only for the reasons below.

What we collect, and why

Comments. When you comment on a story or film we keep the name you give, your comment, and, if you provide it, your email address. Your email is never published; we use it only if we need to reply to you about your comment. WordPress also records your IP address and browser type to help us spot spam. Every comment is read by us before it appears, and spam is filtered on our own server.

Record submissions. When you send us a family record, we receive your name, your email address and what you tell us about the person and the record. It is emailed to our research desk and kept in our website’s admin area. We use it only to review the record, to reply to you, and, if you agree, to research and tell the story.

Family film enquiries. When you ask about a family film we receive your name, your email address, and the details you give about your relative, the format and your budget. We use them to reply and prepare a quote. Photographs, letters and other material you later send us are used only to make your film, and are never published on our website or channels without your permission.

Newsletter. If you sign up for our Dispatches, we keep your email address to send them. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can write to us and we will remove you. Addresses are stored on our website or with the email service we use to send the newsletter.

Protecting our forms. To stop automated abuse, our forms keep a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address for one hour to limit repeated submissions. It is then deleted.

We rely on your consent for the newsletter and the forms you choose to send, and on our legitimate interest in running the site safely for spam and abuse checks.

Cookies and storage in your browser

  • We do not use advertising cookies.
  • If you accept statistics cookies in our cookie banner, Google Analytics sets cookies that count visits and show us which pages are read. It does not tell us who you are, and it does not run at all until you accept. You can change your choice at any time under “Cookie settings”.
  • If you tick “Save my name, email, and website” when commenting, WordPress stores those details in a cookie on your device for about a year so you do not have to type them again.
  • When you play a film, your browser remembers which film it was (in local storage on your own device) so the site can offer to take you back to it. It is never sent to us.
  • People who log in to manage the site receive login cookies. Readers never need to log in.

Films and content from other websites

Our films are hosted on YouTube. We use YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player, and it does not load until you press play. Once it plays, YouTube may collect information under Google’s privacy policy. Links to our pages on YouTube, Facebook and TikTok take you to those services, whose own privacy policies apply.

Support and payments

Reader support is handled by Buy Me a Coffee. Payments for family films are taken through a payment provider we agree with you by email. We never see or store your card details.

Affiliate links

Some “Further reading” links on our stories go to books on Amazon. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases, at no extra cost to you. Nothing from Amazon loads on our pages; Amazon’s own privacy notice applies once you are on its website.

Advertising

There are no adverts on this website at present. If we introduce advertising, such as Google AdSense on our story pages, we will update this policy first and ask for your consent where the law requires it.

Who we share it with

We do not sell, rent or trade your information. It is held by the companies that help us run the site: our web and email host, Hostinger; Google, for visitor statistics if you accept them; and, where it applies, our newsletter service and the payment providers named above. We will disclose information only if the law requires it.

How long we keep it

  • Approved comments stay with the story until you ask us to remove them. Spam is deleted automatically.
  • Record submissions and film enquiries are kept for as long as we are working with you, and for up to two years after our last contact, unless you ask us to delete them sooner.
  • Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to contact@theforgottenfront.org and we will reply within 30 days. Depending on where you live (for example the UK, the European Union or California) you may have further rights under your local law, including the right to complain to your data protection authority.

Children

This website is written for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you think a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

The website is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and access to our admin area is limited to our team. No website can promise perfect security, but we take reasonable care to protect what you send us.

Changes to this policy

When we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
